As part of our Meet the Team series, we catch up with Cindy, a portfolio analyst from Trust Management. After almost a year at the company, she talks about her journey into the investment world and what she loves about her role. Cindy also shares the unique challenges faced by non-profit clients in New Zealand and how they tackle these issues, especially with ESG considerations and ethical investing.
What is your role in the investment team?
My role in the investment team is portfolio analyst, looking after client portfolio, investment implementation and client reporting.
How long have you been at TM, why did you join?
It is coming up to my 1 year anniversary in November this year.
What drew me to Trust Management was not only the opportunity to work and learn alongside some of the most knowledgeable professionals, enhancing my development, but also the chance to be part of an organization with a meaningful vision. Trust Management’s commitment to empowering charitable sectors to achieve their goals, along with its focus on embedding ESG considerations and ethical screening in fund management, makes this opportunity particularly inspiring.
How did you end up working in investment and what do you like most about your role?
My introduction to investments began while working at the bank where I assisted new migrant investors with their investment journey in New Zealand. My serious passion for investment began when I joined Jarden Wealth where I was captivated by the dynamic conversations on the daily market updates, shifts in the economic cycle, and investment decisions made on the trading desk and by the advisers.
During the Covid-19 breakout, I took the opportunity to enhance my professional career development by completing the degree in Master of Finance. This achievement paved the way for my role as a portfolio analyst with the investment team at Trust Management. I enjoy working in this fast-paced environment, where I continuously gain valuable insights and extract meaningful information from financial and economic data.
What unique challenges do our non-profit clients face?
Not-for-profit organisations in New Zealand face many challenges and it is becoming increasingly evident under the rising costs and tightening of government funding. Ensuring a steady income to fund distributions while maintaining a sustainable drawdown rate is crucial for our clients. Under the current market climate, we observe an increasing reliance on using reserves to fund service delivery. With ESG considerations and ethical investing at the heart of our strategy, we work closely alongside of our clients tailoring our advice to their unique needs whether it’s capital preservation, maximising distribution, or both.
Outside of work what are you most passionate about?
Outside of work, I am a foodie and a dog lover. If you stop me for directions, I will not only give you the directions but also the best croissant in the area.
